show 123 – Don Viramontes

I enjoyed tonight’s show – – Don’s music is perfect for the hot summer nights (even though its technically still spring).

Here’s tonight’s rundown:

Sarah Harmer – Almost – All Of Our Names (Zoe/Rounder)
Peter Mulvey – Road To Mallow – Kitchen Radio (Signature) < -----I actually meant to play "Shirt". Oh well. Don Viramontes live:         Me Oh My         Maybe It Was Me         The Solitude Of You         Nothing         Shooting Star (Dylan) Don Viramontes - San Francisco Nights - Another Broken Truth (self) Libby Kirkpatrick - Goodnight Venus - Goodnight Venus (Heart Music) Little Sue - Country Song - The Long Goodbye (self) Tori Amos - Way Down (newer version) - Tales Of A Librarian (Atlantic)

show 122 – Preacherboy

Preacherboy, blues man from NYC, was a damn fine sport — playing songs and taking care of the air while I took care of phone calls for pledge drive.

His National guitar was beautiful – wish I had snapped a photo of it.

I’ve had alot of genres featured on Hello Cruel World, but never Blues — and never with a slide. I truly dig the sound of slide guitar blues.

Here’s how it all went down:

Preacherboy – A Little Better When It Rains – Demanding To Be Next (Coast Road Records)

Preacherboy live:
         Coming Up Aces
         Death Letter (Son House Cover)
         My Gold Canoe
         99 Bottles

Grant Lee Phillips – Lily A Passion – Virginia Creeper (Rounder)
Erin McKeown – Cosmopolitans – Grand (Nettwerk)
Super XX Man – Hey Louise – My Usual Way (Lelp)
Edie Carey – Chemistry – When I Was Made (self)
Don Viramontes – San Francisco Nights – Another Broken Truth (self)

next week — the soulful stylings of Don Viramontes!

canceled: Girlyman

Sadly, I had to cancel the in-studio with Girlyman. Its been a hellish week at work, we’re shorthanded and I couldn’t justify taking the time off work to do the pre-record.

Their manager says that they’ll be back here sometime early next year, so if Hello Cruel World is still around, maybe we can rope them in then.

In the meantime, I have the Girlyman cd, and will be listening to it in the weeks ahead finding good tracks to play from it.

Other cds that are getting heavy rotation in my cd player are the new one from Chris Moore, the new Ron Sexsmith, and the new Sarah Harmer.

Here is the schedule of upcoming guest appearances:
18 April – Preacherboy
25 April – Don Viramontes
9 May – Casey Neill and Little Sue

Finally, this coming Sunday is the last night of pledge drive (at least as far as my show is concerned). We’d all love it if you called up and pledged us some money!!

show 121 – John Vecchiarelli & Todd C. Bayles

John came down to HCW today and brought Todd with him (on accordion) as special live guest for DAY ONE of the KPSU pledge drive. Unfortunately, not a single pledge came in on my show tonight!! You all can redeem yourselves next Sunday, when my guests will be Preacherboy and Girlyman.

We called tonight the Amp Can Sessions. John Vecchiarelli brought this contraption that looks like a coffee can that his guitar and mic plug into. It gave the songs a cool low-fi indie sound, and Todd accompanied on accordion on two songs – very very cool. Thanks to both of them for making the show so special.

Here’s the rundown of tonight’s show (all cd tracks were handpicked and brought in by John Vecchiarelli):

Elliott Smith – Division Day – Ballad Of Big Nothing EP
Pete Krebs – Fortune Valentines – Bittersweet Valentines EP
Chris Moore – You The Volunteer – Not Yet Released New Album
Erika Simonian – Pretty Good Wife – All The Plastic Animals
Super XX Man – Grace (Glorified) – My Usual Way

John Vecchiarelli live:
        Addition (with Todd)
        Cocoon
        To The Brim
        Lillian (with Todd)

Todd also played some nice little accordion interludes while I pitched for pledge drive.

Did I mention Girlyman and Preacherboy next Sunday?? Girlyman will be pre-recorded and air during the last half hour. Preacherboy will be live from 5pm to 5:30pm. Tune in!!
