show 139 – Jordan Tyler

Jordan Tyler was my guest tonight. He’s written alot of new songs, and brought a handful in tonight — some on cd, some to play live. An added bonus was Jordan’s rendition of John Vecchiarelli’s “My Own Design”, a favorite song of mine.

mp3 blog

If you go to the Wayback Machine — specifically here — around the years of 2000 – 2001, you’ll see that my pal and I hosted what would now be known as an mp3 blog. Yeah, we coded it all by hand almost every week, so it wasn’t a real blog, but the idea was the same.

I love mp3s, and love discovering new songs through blogs. Starting today I will be including mp3 content here fairly regularly. The usual disclaimers apply: i.e., music piracy for world domination or financial success is bad, turning people on to new music is good, screw the majors, mp3s posted here will not last forever, etc. etc.

Begin mp3 subplot —

Dan Bern did a month-long residency in San Francisco a month or so ago. I’m pretty sure that he wrote “Revolution Begins In The Basement” while he was there — just listen to all the SF references. And with his path crossing Chris Chandler‘s at the High Sierra Folk Festival on 4th of July weekend, it seems like a perfect vehicle for collaboration.

——
My favorite DJ game is “What’s The Connection?” I loved playing along listening to station KQAK in San Francisco when I was a kid.
The idea is that there is a thread that runs through a block of 4 or 5 songs. Tonight’s first set had a bit of that game in it:

Mountaintop — is by Loretta Lynn
Car Wheels — mentions Loretta
Blow ‘Em Away — continues the car theme
Revenge — continues the going postal theme.

There you have it; radio dissected right in front of your very eyes.
